West Wilkes High School

Driver Education Class

West Wilkes High School will have remote learning Drivers Education Class starting February 28-March 21. The class will be from 5:30-6:30 Monday through Friday using the Zoom platform. If there are enough students to have two classes, then there will be a second class from 7-8 pm. Students must attend every day and will be allowed only one absence, which must be made up on the last scheduled day. Each student must be 14 1/2 years old on or before March 1,2022. The class is open to all public school students, private school students and, home school students. 

Registration forms maybe picked up at the front office at West Wilkes High School, West Wilkes Middle School, WECHS, or MCCS. You may also go online to the Wilkes County Schools website to print a registration form. Registration forms should be returned to the schools by Friday, February 18. Please put the student's school email if applicable and at least 2 phone numbers on the registration form. Also, check the class time you prefer. There is a $65.00 fee (checks should be made payable to West Wilkes High School). There will be a drive through at Wilkes Wilkes High School on Monday, February 21 from 6-7 pm to collect the $65 fee and issue books/packets for the class.

Wilkes Central High School 
Driver Education Class Spring 2022

Class Location:  Wilkes Central (may change to zoom if needed)

Tentative Class Dates:  February 22nd-March 17th,

Days:  February 22, 23, 24, 25 & 28     March 1, 3, 4, 7, 9,10,11, 14, 15, 16 & 17

Makeup Date:  March 18th

Class Size:  Classes will be limited to 24 students.  Youngest students may be placed in a third class to be taught beginning March 28th.

State Law requires students to be 14 ½ by the first day of driver’s education classes.  Students must have had their 14th birthday on or before August 22, 2021. 

Registration:  A drive-through registration event will be held in the rear student parking lot on Thursday, February 3, 2022. from 4 to 5 pm. 

Registration packets will be distributed during this event.  All forms must be returned to the school by Friday, February 11, 2022.  Be sure to include the student’s school email address and a cell phone number for both the student and a parent.  Homeschool students will also need a valid email address.  It is very important that all information is legible and accurate.

Students will be contacted through email/telephone call to confirm enrollment.  If a student is not contacted 24 hours in advance of the first scheduled session, the instructor should be notified!  Please contact Mike Greene at 336-957-6977.


Additional Information and Requirements

The classes are open to all public school students, homeschooled students and private school students.

The course is 30 hours long, and students are required to attend every day.  Students may miss one class session for any reason but MUST attend the make-up day.  Students must attend 15 of 16 sessions, and there are no exceptions.

Class fees are $65.00.  Please make checks payable to Wilkes Central High School or bring $65.00 in cash.

All forms must be returned to the school to the front office by February 11, 2022.   

Behind the Wheel training with the oldest students being scheduled first.  Please do not expect to be given a driving schedule when the classroom portion is completed.  Mike Greene will be in charge of BTW training, and there are many factors that determine when students are scheduled.  Every effort is made to get students through this hands-on training as soon as possible.

If a student misses the required drive-through eye exam, they will not be scheduled to drive until they have a valid eye exam and completed form.
